Words of Affirmation
Let's Do This
Words have tremendous power.
They can uplift, tear down, motivate, discourage, and have the ability to leave a lasting impression. When working with young people, it’s important to choose your words with intention. The messages young people receive during their formative years play a role in how they view themselves and build resiliency. For strategies on having positive and meaningful conversations with young people, check out this resource from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).
Stay Inspired
Set a goal to encourage at least one young person every day through words of affirmation.
You can do this by offering a word of encouragement before a big day, affirming their effort and not just the outcome, or highlighting a character trait that you admire. Here are some actual statements you can use, but mostly importantly, be sincere.
- I believe in your ability to figure things out.
- I’m grateful for the way you contribute to this team/family/class.
- You are learning skills that will serve you for life
- You have a unique perspective that matters.
- I appreciate the way you treat people with kindness.
