The Meaning of Trust

Trust is the building block of all relationships. Without it, the relationship is like a building created so insubstantially that it falls apart in the slightest breeze. But what exactly are the components of trust? Brene Brown, a research professor at the University of Houston, took a closer look and found some interesting discoveries.

First, she explains that trust is built in the smallest moments, not in grand gestures. It is based on everything we say and do in a relationship. Another discovery is that people trust those who ask for help when they need it. It’s not about being perfectly capable and available to those around us.

Brown came up with an acronym called BRAVING to break down the specific components of trust: Boundaries, Reliability, Accountability, the Vault (keeping confidentiality), Integrity, Non-judgment, and Generosity.
