The Importance of Person-First Language
Caring adults can help all young people feel known, recognized, cared for and celebrated for their unique abilities, identities and backgrounds. An important step in recognizing a young person's individuality is using person-first language.
Person-first language is language that honors a person's individuality and humanity first and recognizes that a diagnosis or situation is not who a person is but rather is a part of them. For example, "a young person living with a diagnosis of..." or "a young person experiencing homelessness."
