The Importance of Discipline
It will likely happen at some point: a young person will behave in a negative way that requires us to act. Those moments are tough...but if we remember to stay in control, everyone can get through the difficult situation and come out better on the other side.
The following discipline guidelines can be used if the parent is not around to assume responsibility for a child’s behavior. Don’t forget to inform the parent about the steps you took and why you took them.
- Never physically discipline.
- Never use abusive language.
- Don't use ultimatums.
- Explain to the young person why you find their behavior unacceptable. Most children will listen and respond to reason.
- Discuss your concerns. Don't give the child the silent treatment to solve the problem.
- Determine consequences together.
