Teaching Others About Mentoring
Happy International Mentoring Day! We celebrate this day by educating others about the power of mentoring and how it contributes to making the world a better place. Mentoring happens all around us – in school, at home, in the community. And yet, 1 in 3 young people will grow up without the support of a mentor. Together, we can change this!
Mentoring provides a variety of benefits for youth. For example, research shows that young people with mentors are:
- 52% less likely to skip school.
- 78% more likely to volunteer regularly in their communities.
- 130% more likely to hold a leadership position in a club or sports team.
The benefits don’t stop there either! Mentors report getting just as much out of a mentoring relationship as they put into it. Who doesn’t love a win-win situation?
Mentoring can:
- Help uplift individuals who feel isolated
- Teach individuals how to connect with others and form healthy relationships
- Improve self-esteem, self-confidence and behavior
- Expose individuals to new and different perspectives
- Improve communication and leadership skills
