Talking about sad feelings and depression.
Do you have a young person in your life who seems withdrawn or depressed? It can be difficult to delve into these feelings. We may not feel we have the right words or fear pushing someone away. Perhaps we’ve inquired about the sadness and only received a shrug or an empty stare in response.
Kids don’t always understand the cause of their sadness or can’t articulate it. Instead, try starting the conversation by showing your concern. “You seem a little down this week. I care about you and want you to feel better.” You might also share some of your own feelings. “I also have felt a little down this week. I had a difficult conversation with a friend and it left me feeling lonely.”
