Challenge Growth

Strike while the iron is cold.

Responding to challenging behaviors can be one of the most difficult things. Helping children learn how to control their impulses can be a very effective way of addressing challenging behaviors. Striking while the “iron is cold” requires that we first explore WHEN negative behaviors generally occur. If we do this thoughtfully BEFORE the negative behavior occurs (while the “iron is cold”), then we can establish ways for children to WANT to control their behavior.

Ask yourself:

  • What triggers the challenging behaviors? Example: Acting up in the van with other kids.
  • What incentive can you put in place to encourage self control over the behavior? Example: If you can control your behavior on the van, is there a BIG reward that results? Front seat privileges? Control over the music? Choosing where we start at the zoo or getting to be the team captain?
  • Can you hold your ground and consistently enforce the consequence?

Don’t get discouraged. Kids will break the rules and test your resolve. No behavior changes over night!
