Positivity in Affirmations

With the complexities and challenges of the world, it can be easy to lose focus and dwell on the negative.  But it's essential to maintain a level of optimism and positivity.  Daily affirmations enable us to do just that.  According to Dr. Kathryn J. Lively, "Affirmations are used to re-program the subconscious mind, to encourage us to believe certain things about ourselves or about the world and our place within it.  They are also used to help us create the reality we want."  By restating affirmations, we are confidently vocalizing our aspirations, dreams and desires.

Try incorporating affirmations in your routine with a young person.  Follow some of these simple tips to get started:

  • Begin the affirmation with "I" or "I am" -- affirmations are typically in the first person.
  • Speak your affirmation in the positive rather than the negative.
  • Incorporate strong emotional language in your affirmation to emphasize the point you are making.
  • Write and speak your affirmations in the present tense, as if they are happening right now.

Example: "I am successful.  The words 'can't' and 'impossible' are not in my vocabulary!"
