Make Reading a Priority

Let's Do This

There is no more important activity for preparing a child to succeed as a reader than reading aloud together. Fill your story times with a variety of books and remember to be consistent and patient.

Here are some tips from Reading Rockets to support literacy development and make reading fun!

  • Allow children to choose books that interest them.
  • Talk about the pictures as you read.
  • Build vocabulary by focusing on and talking about new words.
  • Connect the story to a child’s world.
  • Ask questions about the story and encourage children to ask what they are wondering about.

Exposing young children to a wide variety of reading material is an important part of the learning process. By providing them with an assortment of stories, they can discover more to spark their imagination and interests!
