Make Reading a Priority!

There is no more important activity for preparing your child to succeed as a reader than reading aloud together. Fill your story times with a variety of books and remember to be consistent and patient.

As adults, we sometimes overlook key elements of the reading process that children thrive off of! Here are some concepts to remember while reading:

  •  There's a difference between words and pictures. Point to the print as you read aloud.
  • Words on a page are made up of letters and are separated by a space.
  • Each letter has at least two forms: one for capital letters and one for lowercase letters.

Exposing young children to a wide variety of reading material is an important part of the learning process. By providing them with an assortment of stories, they can discover more to spark their imagination and interests!

The City of Pittsburgh is teaming up with the Dolly Parton Imagination Library to mail an age-appropriate book monthly to enrolled children ages 0-5. Do you live in the City of Pittsburgh and have a child younger than 5? Register today and your child can receive a free book in the mail each month until their fifth birthday!
