Listen with your eyes.

“So, what happened?”

This phrase is heard very differently depending on the tone and body posture of the speaker. Was it said by someone leaning forward in their seat, their eyebrows raised and their mouth open? That would convey interest, curiosity and even anticipation. But if the phrase was said by someone with their hands on their hips, a stern tone and a furrowed brow, we pretty much know we’re in trouble.

Staying attuned to the youth in our life means listening with our eyes as well as our ears. Paying attention to their body language and tone of voice often gives us more information than anything that comes out of their mouths.
