Listen with empathy.
Listening well can be difficult to master. We are trained to ask questions and give advice to young people. The most effective communication with young people starts with listening without interruption for as long as they want to talk. Remember:
- Try to see things from their perspective; you have an advantage -- you know what it was like to be their age!
- Keep an open mind; young people feel misunderstood
and isolated when you judge them. - Try to stay focused on a young person's feelings; focusing on the facts can lead you away from what they really want you to know.
- Let them know you appreciate that they chose to speak with you. It is an honor to have a young person confide
