Journaling for Inspiration

Welcome to Part 2 on our series about journaling!  Journaling can be a great way to inspire creativity...in young people and adults alike!  If your child likes art, creating an art journal might get him excited about keeping a journal and give him an outlet to channel his passions. Journaling doesn’t require strict rules or guidelines...you can journal about any of your favorite things!  It is a safe space to write down what you see, what you read, what you listen to and what inspires you.

In thinking about ways to encourage journaling, consider this: children imitate what they know. As you start to prompt a young person to journal, you may find that their writing is similar to the structure of a favorite book. The more they write, the more comfortable they'll become with their own voice and style of writing...which can be a great benefit, both on and off the journal pages!

Help your young person get the most out of journaling!  Check out this video for more info on identifying, managing and expressing feelings through journaling.  Here are some questions to ask that might also get the ball rolling:

  • What was the best thing that happened today/this week and why?
  • What was the worst and why?
  • Describe your dream.
  • What was your scariest moment?
  • What is something people need to know about you?
  • Who or what is the most important influence in your life?
