Honoring Juneteenth
In 2021, Juneteenth officially became a federal holiday. Juneteenth, short for June Nineteenth, commemorates African American freedom, yet the struggle for racial equity still exists. Although this day marks a time of celebration, we must not lose sight of the inequities and injustices that are still a reality for African Americans. In addition to taking part in this year's Juneteenth celebrations, take time with the young people in your lives to reflect, educate, and commit to fighting for racial equity.
Here are some ways for you to reflect, educate and celebrate Juneteenth with a young person in your life:
- Attend an educational event
- Have a Read-A-Thon
- Listen to an educational Podcast that tackles the subject of race like NPR’s Code Switch
- Buy from Black businesses
- Check out EmbraceRace, which includes resources to help parents, guardians, educators, and other caregivers raise kids who are thoughtful, informed and brave about race
