Helping Young People Manage Fears

Young people of all ages are learning about the world and how to be safe and, of course, they get scared sometimes!  As caring adults, we can help young people manage their fears and feel safe. It's important to remember to not minimize or dismiss their fears by ignoring them or saying things like "that wasn't scary" or "you're being silly." That's not very comforting to hear when you're scared!

Instead, try to understand their fear and ask them why something is scary. When you see that they're scared, acknowledge it and let them know that you're there for them. Be patient and take small steps with them to gradually overcome their fear.  Fears are normal, but with your support and reassurance, young people can grow to feel more confident and safe!
