Helping Students Obtain Letters of Recommendation

It’s not just graduating seniors who may need letters of recommendation for jobs and college. Students of all ages will likely need these letters for summer jobs, scholarships and academic/extracurricular programs. This process can be intimidating, and young people may have no idea where to start looking or who to ask. Work with youth to identify who they can ask for recommendations and come up with a plan for asking. Your guidance can help them achieve their goals!

For letters of recommendation, students can look to teachers, school staff, employers, community members or individuals involved with a program or organization they’re a part of that know the young person well. It’s okay for the youth to send a gentle reminder before the letter is due, and they should be sure to thank their recommender sincerely!
