Fostering Independence
Fostering independence is an important part of personal growth for a young person. As a child grows, they have the opportunity to become contingent or independent children. Contingent children depend on others for incentive to achieve and for their own happiness. They oftentimes lean on others to determine how they feel about themselves.
Independent children are intrinsically motivated because they find their own reasons to achieve. These children have a collaborative relationship with the adults in their lives and develop good decision-making skills because they are given the opportunity to consider various options and, with the support and guidance of an adult, make their own decisions.
As an adult, your responsibility revolves primarily around providing the opportunity, means and support for kids to pursue their goals. Psychological means include love, guidance and encouragement. Practical means include ensuring that your young person has the materials needed and proper instruction to achieve a goal. The child’s responsibility involves doing what is necessary to maximize the given opportunities. This includes giving their best effort, being responsible and disciplined, staying committed and giving a realistic try.
