Fostering Conversations About Civil Rights and Racial Equity

Conversations with young people about racial equity, racism and civil rights in our country aren't always easy, but they're absolutely necessary.  Youth may have questions about stories they've heard or events they've seen in the news and it's important that we as caring adults help to foster meaningful conversation around how each of us can inspire change at home and in our communities.

Learning about the history of the civil rights movement and what we all can do now to dismantle systemic racism are important topics to discuss with kids of all ages.  Whether you're just starting to have these critical conversations or you're continuing them, there are a variety of resources that can help.

Explaining the history of the civil rights movement and racial equity can be easier with the help of books.  Scholastic has compiled this list of books related to the civil rights movement that is tailored to kids of all ages.  If you're looking for ways to celebrate Black History Month with your young person, check out this list of suggestions from our friends at Maryland Mentor.
