Every Kid Needs a Champion
As adults, we have the unique opportunity to impact and influence young people—to be their champion. When we accept the role of being a champion, we are accepting the position to be someone who supports them and encourages them to reach their potential.
In her Ted Talk entitled Every Kid Needs a Champion, long-time educator Rita Pierson discusses the importance of being a champion. She emphasizes the power of fostering positive relationships with young people and developing an authentic connection with them. We should all strive to make every child feel like they are somebody and to remind them that we are their champion.
"Every child deserves a champion; an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists they become the best they can possibly be." -- Rita Pierson
Here are some ways to be a champion:
- Be empathetic and understanding
- Be able and willing to apologize or admit shortcomings
- Be an encourager or motivator
- Go the extra mile to show a child you care
