Don't Lose Learning Momentum This Summer
Hard to believe it, but this school year is almost over! While it's nice to get a break from the day-to-day school schedule, it's important to take time over the summer to build on the learning momentum a child has sustained over the past year.
Go for a nature walk to learn more about local plants or wildlife. Take a rainy summer day and head to a museum or science center. Choose a favorite book (or series of books!) to read together. Being intentional about creating fun learning experiences can help to combat "summer slide" and keep a young person on track for success next school year!
This Scholastic Parents article shares three ways to prevent summer slide, including:
- Pick Six: Research shows that reading just six books during the summer may keep a struggling reader from regressing. When choosing the six, be sure that they are just right — not too hard and not too easy. Take advantage of your local library and ask for age-appropriate recommendations!
- Read Every Day: Whether it's a newspaper in the morning or a recipe in the afternoon, help a young person identify opportunities throughout their day when they might be able to practice their reading.
