Developing Learner Agency
One of the effects of the pandemic has been the need for employers, teachers, workers, pastors, parents – basically everyone! -- to innovate and adapt to embrace this “new normal” that we live in. As a society, we’ve had to create new ways of working, learning and living. In speaking with other adults, the pandemic has also allowed for the opportunity to test out new hobbies and explore other interests. You may have also noticed the need for innovation and the desire for experimentation in young people as well.
Innovation and experimentation are not only part of change, but they’re also necessary for growth. As Everyday Mentors, it’s important that we create a safe space for young people to explore the things that interest them, even if it creates a mess or we are uncertain of the outcome. As the pandemic still looms and continues to cause us to pivot and innovate, consider how you encourage and make space for youth to explore new opportunities.
Here are 5 steps you can take to support and develop learner agency:
- Exposure & Purpose: Expose young people to new ideas and experts in a variety of formats.
- Set Goals & Plan: Goal setting is key to the learning process and provides a roadmap for what’s trying to be accomplished.
- Take Action: Once a clear goal is established, then explore, explore away!
- Offer Guidance & Support: Failure is a part of the learning process. Offer support to young people as they explore their sparks and/or connect them to others that can help them gain additional skills and knowledge.
- Reflect & Revise: Modify the things that didn’t work well the first time.
