Creating a Healthy Attitude Toward Food

It can be difficult to have a good relationship with food in our current culture. Enticements for unhealthy food lurk around every corner and we are often on the run and too busy to prepare and enjoy a quality meal. What seems harmless in the moment--like grabbing a quick burger and fries--can lead to obesity and other health issues if done continually.

How can we model healthy attitudes about food so that our kids both enjoy food and nourish their bodies? One tip is to not label foods as “good” or “bad." This can lead to a judgmental attitude about food, which doesn’t get to the heart of the issue. Some foods are “healthy” and keep us strong, while others are “fun” foods that taste good and should be enjoyed once in a while.

Another tip is to not force kids to clean their plate. Kids should learn to recognize when they’re full and stop there instead of eating what was offered. There may be some wasted food, but that’s better than overeating and you can work on the idea of taking smaller portions to start and getting more if you’re hungry.
