Communicating with Teens

It can sometimes be hard for adults to make meaningful connections with teens and pre-teens.  The gap between kids' and adults' interests can seem pretty wide!  Experts suggest that barraging a teen with questions is not the way to soften them up.  Instead, try to be patient and let them talk.  Pick up on what they say and allow them to steer the conversation.  Sometimes, asking a seemingly neutral question can open channels of communication that get wider as trust and enthusiasm grow.

Try these tips for protecting and nurturing the bond between you and the teens in your life:

  • Validate their emotions
  • Give praise
  • Show trust by giving them responsibility
  • Listen without interrupting
