Communicating with Teens

It can be tough to navigate conversations with young people – especially as they get older and begin to encounter new situations, challenges and opportunities.  Should I just listen?  Are they asking for my advice?  Ummm no, you definitely shouldn’t do that!

Knowing when to listen and when to offer advice can be challenging.  When in doubt, lead with your ears.  Sometimes young people just need a shoulder to lean on and ears willing to listen.  As a caring adult, it’s also important to know when a young person might need additional support in dealing with a challenge or problem.

This “Communicating with Teens” resource from Child Mind Institute is written for parents, but it includes a lot of great tips that are appropriate for all adults supporting young people!
