Catch good behavior. Notice the positive!
As adults, we often look at young people and see the many ways they can improve. Whether it’s their grumpy behavior, the C’s on their report card or the clothes all over their bedroom floor, we see how they can improve. We often forget the power of celebrating small successes. Catching good behavior is a two-step process:
- Describe the behavior: Hey, you put your dishes in the dishwasher!
- Label the behavior: Putting your dishes away was helpful and kind. I appreciate it!
Remember, there is so much more that is RIGHT with the kids in our lives than is wrong with them. Notice the GOOD!
