Boosting Self-Esteem

Self-esteem plays an important role in how all of us -- kids and adults alike -- approach and complete our daily activities.  It is often times easy to distinguish a person who has high self-esteem because they are confident in themselves.  But is it as easy to spot a person who has low self-esteem?

As a caring adult, it is important to notice signs of a child who may be struggling with their self-esteem. It is also important to ensure a child with good self-esteem maintains that high level of confidence. A huge aspect of mentoring is being able to boost a child’s self-esteem and confidence within themselves.

Check out this Kidshealth article for ways to identify a child who may be struggling with low self-esteem.  This resource also provides tips adults can try to boost a child's self-esteem, including:

  • Help the child learn to do new things.
  • When teaching kids new things, show and help them at first.
  • Praise the child, but do it wisely.
  • Be a good role model.
  • Ban harsh criticism.
  • Focus on strengths.
  • Let kids help and give.
