TMP Program Spotlight: South Hills Interfaith Movement

Published

South Hills Interfaith Movement (SHIM’s) youth mentoring program is designed to foster the academic and emotional development of middle and high school students living in Whitehall Place, empowering them to graduate from high school and achieve post-high school success in college or the workplace.

Many participating students came to the United States with their families from refugee camps around the world and are working hard to adapt to life in their new country. Mentors join us for two hours, one evening a week, to plan fun activities, lead discussions about positive decision-making and help students think about options for their futures.

Let’s take a look at the impact of South Hills Interfaith Movement’s youth mentoring program:

  • 96% of students in the mentoring program maintained or improved their grades.
  • 74% of students were on the Honor Roll.
  • 58% felt a broadened sense of community and increased ability to connect with diverse peers.
  • 100% of participating students learned about options for continuing their education after high school.

In the 2017-18 school year, students in South Hills Interfaith Movement’s youth mentoring program completed two service projects, visited seven college/career events, went on 29 field trips, and participated in activities like running club, book club, coding class, robotics class, and medical class
