Mission
Statement
The
Mentoring Partnership of Southwestern Pennsylvania expands community capacity
to support quality-mentoring relationships for youth.
Vision
Statement
No youth shall wait for a quality,
appropriate mentor.
Why
The Mentoring Partnership?
-
Research and experience have shown that people who succeed have had
at least one significant adult who cared about them. In many cases
that adult has been a parent. However, with the breakdown of family
structures we need to find other ways to get caring adults in the
lives of children.
- Mentoring
is a proven, cost efficient and effective method of helping young
people, particularly those at-risk. One study of 900 children found
that the presence or absence of adult mentors was the most significant
variable of whether children end up on a street corner or in a stable
job.
- In
Allegheny County, there are more than 13,860 youth in active mentoring
relationships and 1058 children are still on waiting lists for a mentor.
- The
Mentoring Partnership is an affiliate of The National Mentoring Partnership,
collaborating with 30 State and Local offices to share experiences,
resources and expertise to further the initiative of mentoring.
