Thomas & Jonathan

Program:
Beginning with Books
Area:
East Liberty

As a retired teacher, Thomas enjoyed spending his time in the library. One day, a brochure that read "Read Together" caught his eye. It was from Beginning with Books, a center for early literacy. He took a brochure and called to see how he could get involved. He went to an interview where he completed his 33/34 clearance forms, and 3 weeks later he was matched with a 6 year old African American boy named Jonathan.

At the library, where they meet, they each choose a book to read. At the end of the session, they tell each other about what they read.

Thomas and Jonathan have now been reading together for 4 years. Jonathan, who is in 5th grade, is reading at a 10th grade level. Thomas could not be more proud of him. He loves that he has been able to share his passion for books with a child, by volunteering as a mentor.
