Nathan Koble wanted to mentor to impact a child but had no idea how much mentoring would truly change him. When Nathan moved back to Pittsburgh from Washington DC he was eager to catch his breath. He had spent years as a lobbyist for a government agency - a job that was intense and consuming. Nathan began working for a large corporation when he realized that what he really wanted was an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others by connecting with his community and volunteering with children. Unaware of what options were available, Nathan contacted the Mentoring Partnership of Southwestern PA where he was guided to several options based on his interests, availability and other details.
Nathan had expressed an interest in working in a one on one environment where he could be connected with a child and family. Because Nathan was open to mentoring a child with a disability, he was connected with CareBreak at the Watson Institute. Nathan completed the necessary screening and training and began the matching process where he was presented with several families in his geographical area with similar interests who could benefit from his mentoring. Nathan's match with Brandon was an instant click. Enjoyable days at the park, treks to the library or diving into a new board games are just a few activities they enjoy together through their weekly visits. Brandon is thriving under the genuine love and care of Nathan's watchful eye and his parents truly appreciate the time they are given to be together as a couple. Nathan however was absolutely transformed. He was impressed and appreciative at how smooth the process from his initial contact to his timewith Brandon was. He was surprised at how easy it was to carve out time to spend with Brandon and how he looked forward to it more and more each week. Most Importantly, Nathan was amazed at how his time with Brandon truly impacted him.
Long story short - Nathan is leaving the corporate world and giving his time ultimately taking a position with the Peace Corps to mentor children in South Africa for 27+ months starting in September 2009. Nathan will impact hundreds of children - all sparked by one call to the Mentoring Partnership!
