| Become A Mentor |

| 1. |
Application |
|
|
Both the youth (mentees)
and adults (potential mentors) will be asked to complete a written application.
Information such as hobbies, interests etc. may be asked to assist in
the matching process. |
||
| 2. | Interview | |
|
After an application is
received, mentors are then scheduled for an interview, usually conducted
by Program Coordinator. Some programs require more than one interview.
Others require an interview at the potential mentor's home. |
||
| 3. | Act 33/34 Clearances | |
|
Many youth serving
agencies require that volunteers and staff obtain Act 33 and 34 clearances.
These background checks completed by the PA Dept. of Public Welfare
and PA State Police assist agencies in verifying that the potential
mentor does not have a history of child abuse or criminal behavior.
There is a $10.00 fee for each clearance, which may be paid by the agency. |
||
| 4. | Orientation | |
| An orientation
is essential, and helps to clarify expectations, explain any policies/procedures
of the organization, and assist both the mentor and mentee in understanding
what to expect from this relationship. The length and scope of this orientation
(training) will vary depending on the agency with which you chose to volunteer.
The Mentoring Partnership of Southwestern PA conducts a Mentor Training
each month. For the next scheduled date, contact us at 281-2535. |
||
| 5. | Kickoff | |
| Many agencies will hold a group activity that brings the mentors, mentees and other staff and volunteers together for a kick-off event. Usually included are group activities, refreshments and an overview of the program. This is a great opportunity to begin the relationship in a positive fashion, one that helps to reduce the anxiety of the first meeting. |
